Wednesday, April 18, 2012–Day 103- Cadiz, Spain

We docked at Port of Cadiz at 8:00am.  Some archaeologists have proposed that the first Phoenician merchants landed on the shore in 1100 B.C. As we looked around Cadiz we were told there were more than 160 watchtowers, a necessity for a bustling port that had to protect its cargo from pirates. The notorious (except in England where he was knighted) Sir Francis Drake, was one of those famous pirates, who pillaged the harbor in 1587 routing the launching of the Spanish Armada.  Drake’s attack only delayed the Armada – the Spanish fleet got underway the following year.

So, we began our tour of Cadiz.

This is “The Cathedral”  built in the Baroque-neoclassical era. This is documented as Cadiz’s highest tower.

The Castillo de San Sebastian marks the old sea defenses of the city. Jerry stands in front of the old guard post. These three boys were doing their homework on the platform of the fort.

We shopped and shopped, today I bought ONLY two pairs of shoes and a few more gifts! The streets are quaint and the shops go on and on. It’s a real upbeat city with loads of fun things to do.

We found an artist who made uniquely beautiful paintings and clay sculptures.  We stayed in his shop (el Taller de Nando)for an hour or so, marveling at his works.  You can see him working by the cabinet in the picture below.  We bought one of his angels. Although the picture is blurry, you can see he did wonderful paintings also.

After a day full of sightseeing and shopping, our tired legs found their way back to the ship.

We will be leaving Cadiz at 11:00pm. The captain has just told us to put breakables away and tie down everything. Prepare for a rough sea the next 24 hours, as we are now back in the Atlantic Ocean.
