We are sailing through the Malacca Strait, which is one of the world’s busiest shipping areas. The strait is a narrow 500 mile stretch of water between Malaysia and the Indonesian island of Sumatra. This strait is the main shipping channel between the Indian Ocean and the Pacific Ocean. Over 50,000 vessels pass through the strait per year, carrying 1/4 of the world’s traded goods, including oil.
Today, we received our 3 star Mariner pin – which means we’ve sailed over 75 days on Holland American. (all cruises added together).
Today our sea day was full of fun filled activities. We started the day with Ring Toss; then Ping Pong; then another Ping Pong bounce game; then Wii bowling; then tennis serving competition! PHEW – all for Monopoly money that is called Dam Dollars that you redeem for Holland American Line gifts. After all of the activities, and our exercises and weight training, we took a 2 hour nap! It’s rough getting old, but we are enjoying each minute!.
There is a man on the ship that has talked to me for over 2 months, and whenever I see him he tells me what a wonderful husband I have. I had always agreed with him. Today, he sat down and explained to us the reasoning behind his compliment of Jerry. It brought me to tears. He said that he heard Jerry say kind words after leaving an impoverished island, and Jerry mentioned to him that he grew up poor and would never forget. He said that he and his wife have watched us for the last two months and have never seen two people more in love with each other – genuine love. He has that with his wife also and is forever grateful. He shared with us that he grew up poor also and will never forget his roots either.
