For the first time during this cruise, Jerry and I split up in town to do different things.  I met an artist that makes beautiful things with amethyst.  I got presents for all of my brothers and sisters today – lots of fun, but it sure makes me miss them all!

Jerry walked through the town

Monday, January 23, 2012 Day 4 of Overland Adventure

We loaded the bus for a quick tour of the town and then on to the airport to take us to Buenos Aires to catch the ship.

Our first stop was Iglesia Cathedral Basilica de Salta. Beautiful Church. 90% of the people in Argentina are Catholic. They have a display case at the front of the church for silver pieces to represent answered prayers.  Here you will find silver with hearts, legs, monetary symbols, etc.  In Humahuaca (the Indian Villages) they would do the same, except their silver depicted llamas, sheep, or wheat.

The second Cathedral we visited was VIB Francisco Divo.

We then flew the 2 1/2 hours (roughly 1800 miles) back to Buenos Aires, the capitol of Argentina. We toured the City of Buenos Aires with our guide Lucas Davicino.

This is the Pink House, similar to our White House. The soldiers were dressed in red and white during the war and those colors mixed together are pink, so well-a the name was created! Geniuses I say! We arrived back to the ship, which we now call home, to find many passengers were quarantined due to GI illness.

Sunday, January 22, 2012; Day 3 of Overland Adventure

We woke up at 5:00 am to go workout and they don’t exercise on Sundays! Good Plan! So we arrived at the breakfast buffet early! We boarded the bus at 7:30 and left for our full day tour at Humahuaca – it was 520 kilometers which is 300 and some miles!

Our first stop was Pumamarca, “7 Color  Mountains”.  We stopped and shopped at the native artisans.

Back on the bus…our 2nd stop was Tilcara.  First, we learned about the llamas, then later had one for lunch…hmmmm!

We hiked to the ancient Indian ruins.

The cactus would dry up and they would use it for their roof.  Their building system was 2 ply so way back then, they were in tune with insulation factors.  Later, when we went to the market, I bought a bracelet from a local made from cactus needles.

As you can see, the Indians were very small people.  When their babies were born, when their skull was still pliable, they wrapped their head with 2 boards so they had elongated, cone shaped heads.

IMG_2595Lunch was Llama, lamb, and a roots, another zero calorie meal for me!  They performed their local music for us as we ate.

The last stop was Humahuaca, which is 10,000 feet above sea level.  The hike was tough to breathe, but we made it to the top!  We boarded the bus for the long haul back to the Sheraton – 21 VERY tired tourists!

Saturday, January 21, 2012 Day 2 of Overland Adventure!

Woke up early and boarded a bus to cross into the Argentina side of the falls. Had to wait for immigration. We then hopped on a train that took us near the falls, but we still had an 1 1/2 hour walk. Again the weather was low 90’s with humidity so the spray of the falls was refreshing.

We then boarded a plane for Buenos Aires and then another plane to Salta…LOCKED UP ABROAD is one of our favorite t.v. shows, and it was almost my reality…I had written a letter to the little girl from Pine Island (the Walrus Jolly’s owner).  We were standing in line at the airport and I saw a mailbox station so I dipped under the rope to go mail the letter.  I knocked a vial of illegal drugs to the floor and Jerry and another man said – “Nan, you dropped something!” Then we all realized what it was. This pot/hashish was on the rope! I had let two college aged kids into our group line, seems like they got nervous and decided to ditch their drugs!

PLANES, TRAINS AND AUTOMOBILES…to the airport and boarded our flight back to Buenos Aires, then on to Salta….one longgggg day!
